The only cheering thing about the recent riots is the speed at which some have been tried, found guilty, and sentenced. The sight of people going to prison almost immediately has acted as a deterrent to further riots. That is a good thing.

Slow procedures undermine justice. Victims should not have to wait years to see the perpetrator found guilty and punished appropriately. The innocent should not have to wait years to be found not guilty.

Faster justice would free up prison places. One in seven prisoners await trial, and one in ten will be found not guilty. Faster justice can free up at least 1,000 much-needed prison places.

Here’s how to do it.
